Marine Skills is a middle school elective course designed to provide students with four essential aspects of marine and environmental education in South Florida. Those aspects are:

  • A fundamental study of water and its relationship to local natural and cultural history.
  • Recreation skill development through outdoor education.
  • Personal and interpersonal development skills leading to effective employability qualities.
  • An introduction to careers related to seagoing military, marine science technology and maritime occupations.

MIAMI SEAQUARIUM

FOCUS: Students will explore marine biology concepts through observation of living specimens.

PROGRAM: Students use Miami Seaquarium as a huge progression laboratory. Laboratory studies include observations in the touch tank, the whale show, the lost islands, the manatee pool, the shark channel, and a research project at the reef tank.

DATES AVAILABLE: Any day.

COST: Park entrance covered by the MAST ACADEMY OUTREACH PROGRAM, while funds last.
Transportation covered by school.

TEACHER MATERIALS: Download copies of the pre-trip, on-site, and post-trip packets.

STUDENT SUPPLIES: Each student must have a clipboard, a pencil, and a copy of the Seaquarium on-site packet.

LUNCH: Bring a bag lunch and drinks. We recommend that the school pack a lunch for all attending the trip, as time constraints do not permit major purchases. Students may wish to buy drinks. Remember that your students are guests of Miami Seaquarium. Please say "thank you" by making sure your lunch area is CLEANER than when you arrive.

ARRIVAL/DEPARTURE: Since you are paying for transportation, you may extend your field trip day as it suits your schedule. Please note that the Seaquarium does not open until 9:30 AM.

When you arrive at the Seaquarium, check in at the school group gate at the far right of the Seaquarium complex.

EVALUATIONS: Teacher evaluations for this field trip must be completed and returned to the Outreach Office within ten class days after the trip.

RECOGNITION: All students sucessfully completing 80% or more of pre, on and post-site activities will receive a Certificate of Recognition from MAST Academy Outreach.
